Whole of October
The whole month of October is dedicated to several things including Go Sober for October, Black History Month, Breast Cancer awareness, ADHD awareness, International Walk to School month and National Cybersecurity awareness month.
October also hosts The Big Draw 2022. Which is aiming to bring the world together through drawing. There is a festival theme this year with the title of ‘Come Back to Colour’. Get your crayons out and rediscover the joy of drawing.
1st-7th October
National Walk Your Dog Week
If you have a companion dog then you’ll already be walking them regularly. But this week, why not share your walks on social media or find some new walking routes?
It’s great to get out in the fresh air so take time to soak it all in this week before the cold really sets in and your walks may become less enjoyable!
2nd October
International Day of Non-Violence
Falling on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, this is a day to recognise that great change can be achieved through non-violent, peaceful civil disobedience.
The practice dates back hundreds of years and is still being deployed throughout the world to try and effect change.
You may have experienced it here in the UK with groups like Extinction Rebellion, Animal Rebellion, Just Stop Oil and School Strike for Climate. These groups are peacefully ‘fighting’ for the future of our planet and all those who live on it.
2nd October
The London Marathon
Possibly a bit late for this year but you could dust off your trainers and get in training for next year.
3rd-9th October
National Curry Week
Tikka trip to your local curry house this week. You’d be Madras not to!
3rd October
National Boyfriend Day
Spoil them and show how much you love them.
3rd October
World Habitat Day
Celebrated on the first Monday of October, the theme this year is ‘Mind the Gap’. It will focus on the issue of the growing inequality and challenges in human habitats.
4th October
World Animal Day
Get involved and show you care for the welfare of our world’s animals.
They’re here with us, not for us, and need to be recognised as sentient beings with full regard and respect for their well-being.
4th October
No Disposable Cup Day
The UK is one of the highest consumers of disposable cups using a shocking 2.5 billion per year!
The best thing we can do to promote sustainability and to help the environment is to use reusable cups. They come in all shapes, colours and sizes and in a whole range of materials.
Plus, a lot of companies have incentives and schemes to discourage the use of disposable cups, like charging extra for their use or giving you a discount if bring your own.
5th October
International Teachers Day
A day to recognise the importance of the teachers in our communities. They’ve had a tough time recently so show them some love.
6th October
National Badger Day
Did you know that badgers’ setts can be over 100 years old and that they can run up to 19mph? Pretty impressive, but sadly not fast enough to outrun cars which kill 50,000 badgers per year.
Sadly the UK also still carries out a badger cull every year and since this practice started in 2013, over 176,000 have been needlessly killed.
It’s time to stop this as badgers are not the problem. Check out ‘Can The Cull’ for more information if you’re interested.
9th October
World Post Day
Is there anything better than getting a pen pal letter on beautiful stationery? Sadly, all that comes through our door now is bills, bumf and parcels!
1oth October
Animal Road Accident Awareness Day
It breaks our hearts to see animals on or at the side of the road after being hit by traffic. No animal deserves to be left there like rubbish after an accident.
We all need to drive with caution, especially in rural areas, but accidents do happen and sadly around 630 cats are hit every day in the UK alone.
Have a Google today to understand what your obligations are if you hit or come across an injured animal.
1oth October
World Mental Health Day
You wouldn’t ignore a physical illness so let’s not ignore mental illness.
Today is a day to be open about our own struggles and support those around us who may be struggling too.
We don’t need to suffer in silence, let’s shake off the stigma and raise awareness and acceptance of an important health issue. You can find lots of support and information at the Mind website to help both yourself and others.
11th October
World Coming Out Day
A day to raise awareness, promote tolerance and campaign for equal rights for all.
As the name suggests it’s also a day for people to come out to family, colleagues and friends and live an open life.
12th – 15th October
National Work Life Week
Are you spending more time at your computer now you’re working from home? Time to take a look at that work-life balance.
Or maybe you’re going back into the office in this new hybrid working world.
Just make sure you’re well-being isn’t taking a back seat.
12th October
World Arthritis Day
Did you know that there are more than 10 million people in the UK suffering from arthritis? Which means there’s a very good chance you will know at least one person with it or will suffer from it yourself.
Today is a perfect day to share your tips for relieving the symptoms.

13th October
National No Bra Day
How good does it feel to get home and whip off that bra! While this may seem an odd thing to celebrate there is a deeper meaning to the day.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, No Bra Day is a reminder for all women to be screened for breast cancer when they can.
Most types of breast cancer can be treated if caught early so don’t miss your appointment. While you’ve got that bra off, have a good feel and really get to know your boobs so you can be straight on the ball if you notice any changes.
13th October
World Sight Day
#LoveYourEyes.
Don’t take your eyesight, or the fact you can get an eye test for granted, there are so many people on this planet who don’t have access to good eye care.
If you’re an employer, you can pledge to encourage all your staff to go for a test, or better yet, give them a free eye test as an employee benefit.
15th October
National Grouch Day
Remember Oscar from Sesame Street? He was the King of Grouches so embrace your inner, or maybe you’re outer Oscar and get all your complaints, grumbles and misery out today and process your negative emotions.
17th October
National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day
How nice was it when your computer was new and the desktop was organised, the trash bin empty, there were no viruses and wow, how fast was it too?
Time to see how close you can get back to that today.
18th October
National No Beard Day
